The Catalytic Converter is part of the Original Exhaust System; Since 1993 for Petrol Engine vehicles and 1997 for Diesel Engines.
You need the Catalytic Converter to convert harmful gases into ones which are environmentally and human friendly.
Now for the technicalities…………………..
As a vehicle generates power, heat and exhaust gases are emitted; these are Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen and Hydro Carbons. (CO N2 NOx) The Catalytic Converter will transform these harmful gases into Carbon Dioxide and Water; (CO2 H2O N2)
The “CAT” is made up of a ceramic or metal monolith (much like a cone) and coated with precious metals including rhodium, platinum and palladium. The contact of the gas to the coated “cone”cleans the gas released into the atmosphere.
